I went round the nest boxes with the licensed handlers as they were weighing and checking the dormice hibernating inside them. We managed to find a couple in such a deep sleep they didn’t even stir as they were picked up and examined.” The tiny rodents can hibernate for six months out of the year - and even longer if the weather remains cool.
